LoLa Art Crawl

The LoLa Art Crawl is our local art crawl hosted by the League of Longfellow Artists, with artist’s homes and studios open to the public for two days. In its second year, it’s a polished event, brought to my attention first by the sudden disappearance of our neighbor’s furniture from their front porch. Not having been robbed the night before as I first worried, they were participating in the LoLa crawl, and the front porch would be one of many spots where Richard Parnell would be displaying his pieces. Art Prints

Art wise in our house, this past year has been all about the Art Print, specifically, the (music) poster print. I love the paper aesthetic, variety and visual stories. The usual suspects constantly turning out new and awesome prints from a wide variety of artists are 20×20, etsy (obviously), and Poster Cabaret. Some specific talents I’ve been checking back to are The Small Stakes and The Heads of State, to add to the current collection I’ve grown this year. Read more

The Modern Quilt Guild has had a recent online conversation about what constitutes “modern quilting” by looking both at what we consider traditional quilts, and asking other quilters how they define a modern quilt. I love that this article points out what is considered modern, is indeed what was contemporary at the time it was created (yes, the art history major in me). Read more

Modern Quilting

I grew up with quilts – the ones my mother or aunts made; estate quilts, wall hanging quilts, quilts for beds and quilts for babies; quilts that are cute, some stunning, others quite country. I never really thought I would MAKE a quilt until I came across “Material Obsession” which is a modern quilting book, with quilt patterns ranging from simple patchwork to those of fine detail in pattern shape and stitch. Like 1824 France, but Today: The Salon

One of the more fascinating aspects of my Art History education was 19th C. art, particularly The Salon – the paintings exhibited, who attended, the controversies and drama. Great Stuff. In popular culture today we see the “Salon Style” quite a bit in terms of your at-home framing and hanging ideas, made popular by IKEA and better demonstrated in this picture. Read more
