Minnesota has had an unusually warm fall, with temperatures lingering in the upper 50s to mid 60s, which makes the wool coat I keep putting on in the morning quite unnecessary. It feels like Thanksgiving is another month out, though only two weeks away. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and always has been despite having shared my birthday multiple times with a turkey (an off-year this year, my day will be celebrated on Sunday). Read more
Happy (almost) Halloween! It’s starting to get a little chilly outside, and the sun is going down earlier than I like but there’s just something about Fall I look forward to every year – first time putting a sweater back on, wearing tights, the chain of holidays. Read more
No, I am not getting ahead of myself (best to anticipate, though winter is months away). It’s turning cold and rainy here in Minneapolis, and my sights are turning back to knitting, sewing and inside projects that will get me through the winter. Read more
SUSHI: Last night Frank took me to Koyi Sushi Too, and it was good sushi, you know, for the Midwest. Really good Gyoza. The interior looked sort of LA-ish but had these kitschy little items like fake rice in a mini bowl and random porcelain cats scattered throughout the restaurant. And they had Frank Sinatra playing in the background (songs from the Vegas years I think), and the view offered up a Holiday pump where people were getting gas. Kind of hipster on paper, but not in feeling. Needless to say, we sought out for a new sushi joint that pleased us, and pleased we were. And, close to home in the Seward neighborhood. Read more
I’m pretty excited about this weekend, as it is the perfect balance between social calls and at-home coziness. Here’s what’s up for the weekend:
1. Starting it off with my favorite, Mac+Cheese with Leeks and this time, I’m adding bacon. Should be awesome. Read more
Friend and fellow blogger Elisabeth Carr of mission:closet wrote a great piece, “Wardrobe Refresh,” published earlier this week in Mission Local, for San Francisco’s Mission District pub. As the new year came around, and living in Minnesota, I took a moment to feel the fashion blahs, as style goes to the wayside for thermal underwear and wool sweaters. Read more
It’s that time of year for those of us in the Twin Cities to go see the Walker Art Center’s screening of the 2009 British Television Advertising Awards. Working at a design agency, and growing up in an artistic climate with a love for art, going to this every year has become a tradition for not only myself, but for 20,000 locals. Visit the Walker’s Film & Video page for screenings that haven’t sold out yet, and the British Television Advertising Awards homepage for a preview. Read more
Simple, Good and Tasty has partnered with local restaurants to bring Mpls folks a Local Food Lover program at $29/year. This card 1) supports restaurants that buy from local, sustainable, organic farms and 2) gives those that dine at the restaurants discounts. Read more

My fantastically chic friend from college, Ms. Elisabeth Carr, is writing a fashion blog, mission:closet, and turned me onto some great jewelry finds lately, in particular Molly M Designs and a variety of jewelers from Renegade Handmade. This got me thinking about another college friend of mine, Irene Woods, and the beautiful jewelry she’s making at Crow’s Catch (I have several of her pieces from nearly six years ago, and they are still in beautiful shape and haven’t needed any repairs or replacement!). Then last week at the Galleria in downtown Mpls, we ran into Tia from Silver Cocoon and her pieces, which are as beautiful in person as they are shown on her website. I especially love the wood pieces, particularly the triple layered wood necklace. If you’re thinking about jewelry for a family member, hopefully this turns you onto some fabulous designers. And don’t forget to visit mission:closet everyday for new fashion finds. Happy hunting!
